Ethnomusicologist Gonzalo Sánchez Santiago analyzes figurines and ceramic whistles and pipes collected during archaeological explorations by the Centro INAH Oaxaca from 1987 to 1993 at Cerro de las Minas, Huajuapan de León, Oaxaca. As elsewhere in Mesoamerica, these musical instruments are found in some periods but not in others. They thus do not seem essential to the social functions in general.
