The
American Chemical Society-Student Affiliate organization at the University
of Pittsburgh is a vibrant and active undergraduate group. We are dedicated
to fostering a greater knowledge of the field of chemistry and its utility
to humanity, promoting interest in the branches of science throughout
the local community through our various outreach programs, and promoting
closer interactions and relationships among the campus body. To accomplish
this threefold mission, we recruit various faculty and industry members
to speak about their current research projects. Next, by sponsoring
various outreach programs such as the Saturday Science Academy and presenting
exhibits at the Carnegie Science Center for both National Chemistry
Week and the SciTech Festival, this organization is attempting to ignite
curiosity and passion for the sciences throughout the Pittsburgh area.
Finally, members of the student body with diverse backgrounds are able
interact and form friendships through participation in ACS-SA sponsored
activities such as pumpkin painting, holiday parties, and the senior
barbeque.
Because
of the continued dedication and involvement of our members, this society
has received honors and national recognition from the ACS for thirteen
consecutive years. A crowning achievement for our organization was being
one out of over nine-hundred student affiliate groups to be designated
as an “Outstanding” chapters in the 2001-02 academic year,
an honor only thirty other affiliate groups across the country also
received.
We
invite undergraduates in all majors to explore this website to learn
more about the Student Affiliate chapter of the American Chemical Society
at the University of Pittsburgh and extend an open invitation to attend
our weekly meetings held on Fridays at noon in 132 Chevron Science Center.
