ANNUAL REPORT 2004-2005

1. FACULTY, COURSES

The Program for Cultural Studies currently includes 90 members in 20 departments of the School of Arts and Sciences, as well as the professional schools. Members are those faculty who have taught a graduate-level, cross-listed course in the past three years. A total of 42 cross-listed courses in 18 departments during the 2004-2005 academic year. Prof. Paul Bové (English) was responsible for the Cultural Studies Common Seminar (Theories of Empire), offered in Spring 2005. Enrollment for the Cultural Studies Common Seminar for Spring 2005 was 20.

2. GRADUATE STUDENTS, FELLOWSHIPS

The number of graduate students in the School of Arts and Sciences currently seeking Cultural Studies certification is 66. Twenty-two graduate students from 8 departments received Cultural Studies graduate certification this year: Jody Baker (Communication), Anastup Basu (English), Flora Calderon-Steck (Hispanic L & L), Ashley Currier (Sociology), Kate Dimitroff (History of Art & Architecture), Jennifer Friedlander (Communication), John Gillette (Communication), Clark Henderson (English), Nathan Hilberg (Religious Studies), Julia Houkom (Slavic L & L), Martin Kley (Germanic L & L), Andrea Lapin (English), Ignacio Lopez-Vicuna (Hispanic L & L), Irina Makoveeva (Slavic L & L), Luciano Martinez (Hispanic L & L), Hans Mattingly (English), Patrick Mullen (English), Marie Agatha Ozah (Music), Cynthia Persinger (History of Art & Architecture), Paul Scolari (History of Art & Architecture), Ben Sutcliffe (Slavic L & L), and Amos Tevelow (Communication). The recipients of the Cultural Studies Fellowship for 2005-2006 are Jill Dione (English) and Dana Och (English).

3. READING GROUPS AND OTHER ACTIVITIES

The program organized two reading groups during 2004-2005. The first reading group, which drew 28 participants from 10 departments , read Hannah Arendt's Origins of Totalitarianism Friday, February 18 and Thursday, March 24. The second reading group, which drew 8 participants from 5 departments, read Didier Eribon's Insult and the Making of the Gay Self on Friday, March 18.

The Cultural Studies Program at the University of Pittsburgh was chosen as the administrative home base for the Cultural Studies Association (U.S.), which held its Third International Conference in Tucson, AZ April 21-24, 2005. The theme of the conference was Sex, Race, and Globalization. For further information, see www.csaus.pitt.edu.

4. ANNUAL GRADUATE-STUDENT COLLOQUIUM

The 2005 Annual Graduate-Student Colloquium (April 25-26, 2005) was organized around the final research work of the Common Seminar. Prof. Paul Bové (English) was the convener. Twenty graduate students from 7 departments presented research during the all-day event on Tuesday, April 26.
