Course Description

This semester we will examine three of the most popular subjects from folklore and mytholgy:

  1. Dragons and Serpents.

  2. Mermaids and Related Water Creatures.

  3. Fairies and Related Underground Beings.

The texts that will be discussed in class can be found on-line by googling the three words Ashliman Folklore ICL.

Instructor

D. L. Ashliman is an emeritus professor at the University of Pittsburgh. He has a Ph.D. from Rutgers University plus post-doctoral studies at the University of Göttingen and the University of Bonn in Germany. He has also been a guest professor at Carnegie-Mellon University and the University of Augsburg in Germany. He has published five books plus numerous articles on European folktales.

Tentative schedule
