Opportunities:
I am always looking for graduate students interested in topics ranging from legacy effects to contemporary biogeochemical processes. If you are interested in these or related topics, please contact me with the information below. For information on graduate admissions, please consult our department website.
POST DOCS
Patrick Shirey has done a wide variety of fisheries and aquatic ecology work, and in particular, has examined human interactions with fish communities through stream restoration. He was the American Fisheries Society Policy Fellow in 2015. He is the post-doctoral scholar on the Act 54 project coordinating our evaluation of the effectiveness of the legislation governing subsidence impacts from underground coal mining.
Graduate STudents
Angela Mullins is interested in urban metal biogeochemistry and the role of altered urban hydrology in fate and transport. She has been working in conjunction with the Pittsburgh Parks Conservancy to assess the function of demonstration green infrastructure they have installed in the parks.
Becky Tisherman focuses on fluvial geomorphology and the transport of metals in fluvial processes. She is working on the Yunnan, China project, quantifying the contribution of legacy contamination to metal loads to receiving waters.
Marja Copeland examimnes the hydrology, fluvial geomorphology, and nutrient biogeochemistry of urban systems. She is currently working on the Act 54 project characterizing the hydrologic changes following mine subsidence and the effectiveness of restoration efforts.
Memphis Hill characterizes the influence of trace metal contaminants on microbiomes in environmental waters. She is currently working as part of the Heinz water collaboratory reconstructing the metal history in a small lake near Pittsburgh.
Alex Maxim works on trace metal contaminants in urban soils, with an initial focus on the patterns of soil contamination in the Pittsburgh neighborhood of Hazelwood.
