The Epsilon Kappa chapter of Phi Beta Sigma was chartered at the University of Pittsburgh in 1972. The charter members of the chapter, just as the founders, felt that there was something missing, and decided to start with a fresh organization on the campus. The adjective "Mighty" was given to the chapter for various reasons. Since 1972 the Epsilon Kappa chapter have exemplified the principles of Brotherhood, Scholarship, and Service. The chapter also has kept true to the motto "Culture for Service and Service for Humanity." At the university, service projects are a common practice of the brothers of Phi Beta Sigma. Sigmas waging war against cancer, Aids awareness week, and frequent soup kitchen visits are just a few of the projects done by the fraternity. Alternative reasons for the "Mighty" are as follows:
~No disciplinary action taking against the chapter since the beginning in 1972
~Precision in the art of stepping
~Positive presence on campus
~Dedication to not only the students at the University of Pittsburgh but to the communities in the city of Pittsburgh as well
~Great social events that educate, serve, and unite students and people in the community
