Interesting Professional Society

This engineering society deals with the maintencance of the nations rail roads, The American Railway Engineering and Maintenance-of-Way Association. They are a combination of 4 industry related groups that merged in October 1997. AREMA is headquartered in Lanham, Maryland. Its Mission Statement is "The development and advancement of both technical and practical knowledge and recommended practices pertaining to the design, construction and maintenance of railway infrastructure."

  • Who are the members of this society?
    • Engineers of course! What kind you might ask, mostly mechanical engineers and civil engineers as well as non engineer experts on the railroad operations, engineering professors with knowledge of railroad operations, and students in 18 universties in the United States
    • There are hundreds of members in this society as well as hundreds more in colleges across the county
  • Why does this association exist?
    • The AREMA has many confrences across the country, some are open to the public but most are the seperate committees meeting to discuss their specialty topic.
    • The ARMEA has a monthly pamphlet for all of its members as well as texts that anyone can purchase from their website.
  • Becoming a member.
    • I would join this organization if I wanted to be an engineer that worked in the railroad industry sice it would be very useful to get into the field and already know people in it.
    • For students membership is $20. For adults membership is $160.
