Machalilla Settlement Dataset

This dataset serves as a complement to the dissertation The Domestic Mode of Production and the Development of Sociopolitical Complexity: Evidence from the Spondylus Industry of Costal Ecuador by Alexander J. Martín (which can be freely downloaded from the University of Pittsburgh's Electronic Theses and Dissertations Database). It provides detailed data on the locations and quantities of archaeological material within a 100 square kilometer area of the Machalilla National Park, Southern Manabí, Ecuador.

CONTENTS OF THE DATASET 

These data files are organized in the form of ASCII text files that can be read directly or easily imported to an application program such as a database manager or statistics package. There are also spreadsheet files in Excel format.

 
Demographic Projections:  Area/Density Index for each lot and the extrapolation of absolute population numbers. Ceramic Inventory Data:  Ceramic counts by type for each collection lot in the Machalilla National Park Survey.
Shell Inventory Data:  Shell counts by species for each collection lot in the Machalilla National Park Survey. Lithic Inventory Data:  Lithic counts by type for each collection lot in the Machalilla National Park Survey.

In addition there is spatial information in the form of maps provided as AutoCAD DXF files. 
 
Spatial Information:  Map with the location of each collection lot in the Machalilla National Park Survey. Formative Period occupation map.
Regional Development occupation map. Integration Period occupation map.
