STEM Reasoning and STEM Learning |

I have done decades of research on how scientists and engineers think. Now I am applying that understanding of what the goal is to change learning environments.
In recent years, I have been focusing on transforming undergraduate STEM learning, with a mixture of basic research understanding when and why learning improvements alongside very detailed, transformative teaching approaches: we are trying to fundamentally change what and how students learn, rather than trying to give them little trickes to make crappy learning environments 5% less crappy. This work is deeply collaborative with instructors in the disciplines, and I also have completed changed my own teaching.

Integrative Learning Journeys |

Rather than treating courses as 15 topics to be treated in 15 weeks and in one way across students, we've been exploring an approach we call Integrative Learning Journeys. The course is organized across three or four modules that makes coherent and functional connections across content clear. Then students, usually in groups, dig into the content of the modules from the perspective of an application area of their own choose. This personalizes the learning, improves engagement, sensemaking, and systems level thinking.
