Game Summaries:
Pittsburgh vs. Wake Forest 2.8.08 Game Summary:
The Panthers started their season on Saturday night inside the Cost Center in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Coming off a rigorous winter training program, the Panthers were ready to test their metal against a solid Demon Deacon team. It was a slow start for the Panthers as Deacons took the early lead in the opening minutes of the game. However, the Panthers quickly regained their composure as the offense pumped in 5 unanswered goals. The Panthers ended the first half with four more unanswered goals from a variety of Panther players. Both teams settled down defensively in the second half and began to run a smoother type offense. The Panthers finished the evening with a 12-1 score over the Wake Forest Demon Deacons. Goals for the Panthers came from Eamon Brady, Max Quinlin, Chris Logan, Adam McCollister, Robert Musgrave and Jason Faber. The refereeing crew did a great job keeping the game flowing and the calls fair. Overall, the victory was a great start for the Panther team. “This was a great first win for us, we saw a lot good things from a variety of players. It was fun game to coach and watch tonight,” statement from Coach Robert Heaps of the Pittsburgh Panthers.
Pittsburgh vs. Eastern Michigan 2.9.08 Game Summary:
The Panthers continued their opening weekend with a game against Eastern Michigan. The Panther offense came out flat and was not able to gain any type of flow during the game. Eastern started the scoring in the first quarter and took the early lead. Again the Panther offense was able to quickly rebound and take a 3-1 lead by the end of the first quarter. During the start of the second quarter the Panthers were able to push away from Eastern for a short time. However, Eastern was not going to give up that easily. By halftime Eastern closed the gap to make it an 8-4 score. By the end of the 3rd quarter Eastern scored three unanswered goals to make it an 8-7 game. The Panther offense finally ignited again in the 4th quarter, scoring three goals to put away the game for good. “Eastern had a great team that would not give up. They played with a lot of heart and determination,” stated Coach Robert Heaps of the Pittsburgh Panthers. It was poor showing overall for the Panthers. They did not perform well on both sides of the ball. Moreover, some inconsistent officiating made it hard for both teams to find a rhythm during the game. The Panthers ended their opening weekend with a 2-0 record. However, the team has a lot of work to do before they face Buffalo on the 23th of February.
Pittsburgh vs. Buffalo 2.22.08 Game Summary:
The Panthers came into their first conference game of the season with a 2-0 record. They would face a tough and talented Buffalo team who was ready to begin their season on a high note. The Panthers started the game very sluggish and have a very hard time finding the back of the cage. Buffalo, however, was able to sneak out to an early 3-1 halftime lead. As the second half began the Panthers continued to struggle on offense, while their defense, lead by captain Bill Egan remained tough and determined. The Panthers finally gained momentum near the end of the third quarter when Max Quinlin struck the back of the net. The Panthers would soon lose that momentum when the goal was called back because of an illegal stick. The Panthers remained on the attack throughout the rest of the game but it proved to be too little too late as Buffalo sneaked out its first win of the season by a score of 7-4. Scoring for the Panthers included Eamon Brady, Adam McCollister, Rob Musgrave and Jason Faber. “It was a heartbreaker for our players,” commented Coach Rob Heaps. “We had many opportunities to score but just couldn’t find the back of the net.”
Pittsburgh vs. Miami of Ohio 2.24.08 Game Summary:
The Panthers arrived at the Cost Center on Sunday afternoon looking to avenge their first conference loss to Buffalo. The Panthers proved quickly that they were not to be messed with. Pittsburgh’s offense pumped in 5 goals in the first quarter and never looked back. While Miami of Ohio attempted to make some runs at the Panther defense, goalie Phill Kritzer denied any access to his cage. The Panthers ended the first half with a score of 7-2. The Panthers kept the momentum on their side in the second half as well. While Miami of Ohio made a late surge, the Panther defense held strong and continued its domination inside the restraining box. The Panthers won the game with a score of 13-7. Scoring for the Panthers were players Rob Musgrave, Eamon Brady, Ryan Kernus, Max Quinlin, Adam McCollister, Jon Short, and Bill Egan. “I was very pleased with the way the team bounced back from their tough lose on Friday, said Coach Rob Heaps. “We were able to come out strong today and run the offense. We also got the play a lot of the underclassmen which will definitely help us later in the season.” The Panthers will head into this week’s practice preparing a tough rival against Oakland on March 1st.
Pittsburgh vs. Oakland 3.1.08 Game Summary:
The Panthers took to the field on Saturday afternoon with a look of focus and determination. In years past, the Oakland Grizzlies have proven stiff competition for the Panthers. However, this year the home team added some new faces and a new attitude. The Panthers struggled coming out of the gate as the Grizzlies took the early lead. Still, it was only a matter of time until the Panthers would be able to gain their composure and begin the next three quarters of complete domination. At the start of the second quarter, the Panthers went on a 5-0 run to come into halftime with a demanding 6-3 lead. The third quarter proved to be much of the same as the defense stiffened up and the offense began to gel in ways that the Panthers had not seen all year. The Panthers went into the fourth quarter with the game well in hand. The fourth quarter was a shining moment for many of the underclassmen that have worked hard all year. Many players were able to prove that they deserved more playing time in the coming games. Overall, the game was a huge victory for the Panther team that has tasted defeat from Oakland for too long. “This was a quality win for our team today. It feels good to prepare all week for a game like this and see it all pay off on the field,” stated Coach Rob Heaps. Scoring for the Panthers were Adam McColllister, Robert Musgrave, Eamonn Brady and Jason Faber. Assists came from Chris Logan, Max Quinlin and Jon Short.
VA Tech vs. Pittsburgh 3.21.08 Game Summary:
On Friday the Panthers took their first road trip to Blacksburg, VA, where they would face their toughest competition of the season. Fresh off a seven-day vacation, the Panthers were ready to return to their winning ways. However, the Hokies had other plans in store for the Panthers. The game was slow and painful for the Panthers from the very start. The Hokies were able to notch 3 quick goals before the Panther defense was able to settle. After a Pittsburgh timeout the Panthers were able to score a quick man-up goal before the end of the first quarter. The second quarter proved to be much of the same though, as the Hokie offense caught fire early. “We weren’t playing as a team out there today. To many players on offense and defense tried to take the game into their own hands and we failed miserably,” added Coach Robbie Heaps. As the first half drew near, the Hokies had a commanding 13-1 lead. In the second half, the Panthers finally settled on both sides of the ball and played more team lacrosse. With few penalties and a more determined offense the Panthers were able to put two more goals in the back of the net. Ultimately, all efforts proved to be too little to late as the game ended with a score of 13-3. Scoring for the Panthers were Adam McCollister, Bob Keenan and Chris Ryan. “We were sluggish out there today. This was the first time the we have played on grass this season and it showed,” said Coach Heaps. The Panthers travel to Indiana next weekend to take on the Hoosiers.
Indiana vs. Pittsburgh 3.29.08 Game Summary:
Pittsburgh traveled to Bloomington, Indiana on Saturday to take on the Hoosiers. The Panthers were looking to gain a solid divisional victory to help them climb back on track. Both teams looked ready to play as they took the field. The first quarter was slow as the Hoosiers climbed to an early 3-2 lead. The Panther defense looked a little off balance but eventually calmed down and began to play physical lacrosse. As the first half drew to a close the Hoosiers were able to build on their lead to gain a 6-3 advantage. However, the Panthers were not looking to back down from a fight. With the help of some high-spirited half-time commentary from head coach Robert Heaps, the Panthers quickly knotted the game at 7 mid-way through the 3rd quarter. Unfortunately, the Panthers were unable to stay out of the penalty box due to some questionable referee calls. Nevertheless, the Hoosiers capitalized on their man-up opportunities and kept their lead until the whistle blew to end the game. The final score posted 12-8. Scoring for the Panther offense was Adam McCollister, Jason Faber, Ryan Musgrave and Chris Logan. “It was an exciting game right up to end for both teams. I was really proud of how our team fought back in the second half. We just needed to stay out of the penalty box,” quoted Coach Rob Heaps. Next week the Panthers will face their heated rivals West Virginia and Connecticut.
West Virginia vs. Pittsburgh 4.4.08 Game Summary:
After a tough road stretch, the Panthers returned home to take on bitter rival West Virginia. The Panthers entered the game with great intensity. Scoring 3 goals in the first quarter it looked like the Panther offense had figured out the Mountaineer defense early on. However, Pittsburgh’s defense was having troubles also. The second quarter proved to be much of the same for both sides. Both offenses looked impressive and never let up. At halftime the Panthers edged the Mountaineers 7-6. In the third quarter, the Panther defense settled in and began playing more aggressive. As the rain came down, it seemed that this game was going to go down to the wire no matter what. With 2 minutes left in the game and the scored knotted at 12, the Panthers finally took the lead and never looked back. A key save at the end of the game by goalie Phil Kritzer solidified the win for the Panthers. Final scored 13-12. “This was a great game for both teams,” said coach Robert Heaps. “We came out and played 60 minutes of lacrosse in sub-standard weather. It is always fun to watch these two schools square off in any sport.” Scoring for the Panthers were Adam McCollister, Jason Faber, Max Quinlin, Brad Bitting, Eamonn Brady, and Robert Musgrave.
Pittsburgh vs. UConn 4.6.08 Game Summary:
