One of the issues concerning diabetes in South Carolina is the lack of Certified Diabetes Educators (CDEs), especially in the rural and underserved areas. In the late Summer and Fall of 1998, two local health professionals were funded by the Diabetes Connection to become CDEs. These two individuals facilitate the monthly support group and are invaluable as counsel to the committee. Educational workshops are also ongoing in Hampton County as well as quarterly cooking classes. A core group of passionate multidisciplinary committee members is crucial to the ongoing nature of these projects.
