It is important to realize that the moral system does not contain merely the moral rules and the procedure for justifiably violating them, but it also contain moral ideals, those ways of acting that go beyond what is required by the moral rules. To be a morally good person, as opposed to simply not being an immoral person, one must not only not violate a moral rule unjustifiably, one must also follow some moral ideals. Unlike the moral rules, following the moral ideals does not require impartiality, people are morally allowed to give to any charity that they want to. Indeed, it would be absurd to require people to help all persons impartially, for unless one helps no one, it is impossible to do so. General obedience to the moral rules is necessary for a society to survive; significant following of the moral ideals is necessary for a society to flourish.
