Until now the research in maritime health and safety is mainly concentrated in few areas of the world, while sporadic contributions come from other areas of the world. The SIRC, the Seafarers International Research Center in Cardiff in Wales and national research centres in Denmark, USA, France, Spain, Poland, Germany, Norway, Finland, Sweden. In Spain there is no specific research center for maritime health and safety, but substantial research contributions come from the seafarers regional centers for health and safety. Outside Europe there are research in among others in Australia, New Zealand, US, Japan and China. There probably maritime health research in many other countries, but this is normally kept inside the country, like in Russia for example. It is important that the research is ongoing in all places of the world, because the maritime health problems are different in the different parts of the world. Hopefully this lecture can inspire to strengthen the maritime health research as an important part of the developing maritime health and safety in all areas of the world.
