NPPTL functions within the confines of the NIOSH matrix structure.  In addition to the NIOSH geographical structure, NIOSH managers provide leadership to industry sector programs and cross sector programs.  The NPPTL Director is responsible for managing the NIOSH Public Safety Sector Program and the NIOSH Personal Protective Technology Cross Sector Program.  While Public Safety projects are disseminated throughout the Institute, the NPPTL project portfolio is heavily focused on activities addressing PPE for firefighter needs.  Similarly, the portfolio is dominated by projects focused on personal protective technologies, with an emphasis on respiratory protection and personal clothing and ensemble activities.  As of November 2013, the activities conducted by NPPTL are focused in the program areas highlighted in red.
