This multi-year archaeological research program (2009 - 2013) was centered at Machu Llaqta (also known as Ayawiri), a large hilltop site in Peru’s Lake Titicaca Basin, dating mainly to the Late Intermediate Period (ca. AD 1000-1450).  At Machu Llaqta, hundreds of houses, storage structures, and tombs are visible on the surface in densely packed residential compounds.  This project aimed to define how much sociopolitical hierarchy was present, and of what sort, at the site and within its larger vicinity.

Proyecto Machu Llaqta was directed by Elizabeth Arkush (University of Pittsburgh) and supported by a grant from the National Science Foundation.
