CS 3551: Course Policies

Academic Integrity

In general, I aim to build a collegial and collaborative environment in this course. You are encouraged to talk to each other and help each other out! Since we are trying to push the state-of-the-art in research, it is also generally acceptable (and encouraged) to build on the work of others and use existing tools and software, as long as you credit them appropriately, and do not misrepresent someone else's work as your own. In this course (and in any professional environment), you are expected to follow the following general integrity guidelines:

  • Be generous with credit. If someone helps you, include an acknowledgment of their contribution.
  • Read and respect the license of any open source software you use.

You are also expected to follow the following specific guidelines for assigments in this course:
  • Paper reviews: The goal of the paper reviews is to provide a structure to help you think critically about the paper and develop your own understanding of it. Therefore, you are expected to write your reviews independently based on your own understanding and opinion of the paper. You may discuss the content of the papers with other students and use online resources to help you understand the concepts in them, but you must write your own reviews. You may not use AI tools to generate any part of your reviews.
  • Course project: You are encouraged to build on existing resources and to help each other out, as long as you follow the professional integrity principles above. The core intellectual contribution of the project must be your own.
  • All assignments: Any part of a submission (text, code, etc.) that is not your own original work must be clearly marked and cited with sufficient detail for someone else to easily locate your source.

If you have any doubts about whether a particular action may be construed as an academic integrity violation, ask the instructor for clarification before you do it. Academic integrity violations in this course will at a minimum result in no credit for the affected assignment(s) and may result in failing the course and/or be subject to further disciplinary action under the SCI Academic Integrity Policy and the University Guidelines on Academic Integrity.

Late Assignments

Late assignments will not be accepted without prior approval from the instructor. Approval will only be given for valid extenuating circumstances.

Students with Disabilities

If you have a disability for which you are or may be requesting an accommodation, you are encouraged to contact both the instructor and Disability Resources and Services as early as possible in the term. Disability Resources and Services will verifiy the disability and recommend reasonable accommodations for this course.

Religious Observances

In order to accommodate the observance of religious holidays, students should inform the instructor by email, within the first three weeks of the term, of any such conflicts with scheduled course activities. Absences due to religious holidays will not count against your participation grade, and we will work to determine mutually agreeable arrangements if other accommodations are needed.
