Picture of Nora Roberts, aka J. D. RobbNora Roberts started writing in 1979 when a blizzard hit and snowed her in with her two children, then ages three and six old. Reading and making up stories from an early age, Ms. Roberts decided to use her confinement to jot down some of the stories from her childhood. Thus was born her career as a romance novelist.

After writing romance novels, mostly around characters in or from Ireland, she thought she'd try her hand at a new genre — detective novels. She came up with a pen name (J and D come from the first names of her two sons, Robb comes from a shortened version of her last name) and gave birth to Eve Dallas, a New York City homicide detective with her own set of issues. In 1995, the first book in the In Death series, "Glory in Death", appeared in bookstores. The series now has over 20 titles, including novels, novellas, and short storeis, and is still going strong.
