    The most well known prevention strategy in earthquakes is the prevention of a building from collapsing. Several jurisdictions in earthquake prone areas require that all new buildings follow certain construction codes. These codes ensure that the buildin g is structurally sound in the event of a significant tremor.

    Several areas of research, though, are continuing in the area of earthquakes. Foremost, scientists are seeking better ways of predicting when large tremors will occur. Secondarily, there is a recognized need to develop better rescue strategies for retri eving individuals from collapsed buildings.
