Why I love college

  • Independence
  •     The feeling of going day to day deciding what to do for myself is very liberating and rewarding. I feel in control of every aspect of my day and enjoy having the choice to do whatever I want/need to do whenever/wherever I choose. It is a very nice and fresh change from high school where many things were predetermined for me.

  • Challenge
  •     There were various parts during my high school career that I could deem as being challenging, however, none of those instances were anywhere near the level of difficulty presented in college. Right off the bat there were many things being taught to me that I had no idea about, and this is only the beginning of what is to come in the future.

  • New people
  •     Coming to college has not only presented me with many new opportunities for education, but has provided many new people who with to create connections and frienships. There are lots of cool and different people at college that share the same interests as me, and so I am having a good time getting to know these people and look forward to the opportunities in the future to meet others.

  • Different location
  •     Going to college at Pitt and also living on campus has been like a breath of fresh air. All my life I have lived in the same city doing a lot of the same things each and every year, and so coming to Pittsburgh has completely changed everything. There are lots of new things to do and try, places to visit, and the list goes on as to the innumerable things to do in Pittsburgh.

  • More learning opportunities
  •     When I was in high school there were not very many branching paths available to me to choose from, mostly just the couple electives we took were of my choice. However, in college right from the start I am able to create my own schedule, despite only taking general education classes currently, to picking my own electives and deciding which major I will choose later on.

  • Activities
  •     There are so many clubs or groups down here the number is uncountable, providing the opportunity to take part in just about any activity I please and would ever want to. There are clubs for just about every sport, including track and field, which I am very interested in. In addition, Pitt's location in Oakland gives me a lot to do in the area and also I can take thes bus to wherever else I may want to go.

Jobs I would like to do when I grow up

    • Computer Architecture
    • In this position a computer engineer would be tasked with designing and developing new, more powerful computing systems.

    • Artificial Intelligence
    • Designing computer systems that simulate thinking, processing, learning, reasoning abilities and much more.

    • Computer design
    • Research, design and development of new computer components, parts and hardware such as circuit boards, microchips and microprocessors.

    • Operating systems and networks
    • Designing and developing new software and networking systems.

    • Software Applications
    • The designing and developing of computer software that is used to research and solve problems.

    • Robotics
    • The designing and developing of rovotic systems used in various industries

Things I have learned about college.

    1. I thought college would be very difficult coming into it, no matter how prepared I thought I had gotten, and I was very correct in thinking this. Everything is very much more difficult now than it used to be in high school, from the homeworks given to the tests.
    2. I thought coming to college it would take me a while to get used to things and meet new people, but I was not correct in thinking this. Within the first week or two I adjusted to life in the dorm and in Pittsburgh, as well as met several new people who are interested in some of the same things that I am.
    3. One thing I discovered is that I need to put in a lot of hours a week to keep up with things and stay ahead so that I do not get bogged down with work. I also need to see tutors and use my resources effectively so that I may be able to do a lot better than I had prior in my classes.
