The World Wide Web (WWW) is rapidly being recognized as a powerful device for delivering instruction. In this on-line course participants will design, create, and publish their own World Wide Web pages. To this end, students will learn Hypertext Markup Language (HTML), a set of conventions for writing documents for the World Wide Web. Participants will be introduced to different types of web pages and the basic steps for designing web sites that are both attractive and relevant to their professional work. Students will design their own home page or construct a web site for their classroom or school.
This course is divided into four modules, which include:
1. Planning a Website
2. How About a Little HTML?
3. Web Page Design
4. Uploading Your Web Site
You should generally follow this order, but learning about HTML may take longer than other modules, so you can go on to Module Three and learn more about page design. You will also need to have a completed web site before you can use what you learn in Module Four.
While there isn't any particular textbook required for this course, most people like to have some supplemental reference to check with from time to time. There is no textbook on the market for design of educational web sites/pages, but there are some excellent books on HTML. Unfortunately most are very involved and teach you more HTML than you could use in a lifetime (and that's a real problem because HTML is updated every year or two). So, a good book for light reading (but authoritative) is Sams Teach Yourself HTML 4.0 in 10 Minutes by Tim Evans This is a good, basic book. If you want something a bit more involved, try Sams Teach yourself HTML 4 in 24 Hours, by Dick Oliver. Both of these books are well written and don't require you to become a programmer just to build a web page. They also give a list of example web sites that is quite useful. Remember though these are not specifically for designing educational web sites, just ordinary, everyday sites
