senior visiting fellows program
The Basics Note: Senior Visiting Fellows applications are closed until Fall 2020 for the Academic Year 2021-22.
The Senior Visiting Fellows program invites philosophers of science with seniority in the profession to spend a two-term academic year working in the Center for Philosophy of Science. Senior Fellows work principally on their own research project. Because of their seniority, it is expected that they will informally mentor junior scholars also visiting in the Center.
The Senior Visiting Fellow will propose an open-call conference that will be considered for possible inclusion in the Center's activities for the end of the Fellow's year. If the Center proceeds with the conference, it will be funded by the Center and chaired by the Senior Visiting Fellow.
Senior Visiting Fellows are provided:
- A stipend totaling $65,000 to be paid over the course of the eight months of their tenure.
- A centrally-located office on the 8th floor of the Cathedral of Learning, an international educational landmark; a computer (Windows or Mac) with a standard suite of software, if one is needed; library privileges in Hillman Library, whose Archives of Scientific Philosophy houses papers of many leading, modern philosophers of science; on-line services, including email and access to electronic journals; and some minimal office support.
- A full calendar of talks, workshops, conferences and other activities; access (with instructor permission) to graduate seminars taught in the Departments of Philosophy and History and Philosophy of Science; and the company of other Fellows including Postdoctoral and Visiting Fellows and Resident Fellows in many departments of the University of Pittsburgh, and Center Associates drawn from other universities in the Pittsburgh area.
- A stimulating and friendly environment in which to hear about philosophy of science, to talk about philosophy of science, to think about philosophy of science and to create philosophy of science.
Senior Visiting Fellows have no other formal duties. They are expected to reside in Pittsburgh and to undertake research full time in an office in the Center for Philosophy of Science; and to participate in the life of the Center by attending and giving talks, contributing to discussion groups, etc.
Many Fellows are pleasantly surprised by the City of Pittsburgh and enjoy exploring it and the surrounding countryside.
