In each of these examples, there is scientific or anecdotal evidence to justify the proposed interventions. In most cases, the anticipated benefit is based on the biologic plausibility of the outcome, as well as observation in selected cases of the desired benefit. However, before an intervention becomes standard practice, assessment of its efficacy in comparison to standard therapy should be undertaken. This is ideally accomplished through a randomized, controlled clinical trial.
