Besides clinical trials, other types of studies may be used to demonstrate benefits of a treatment. Case reports and case series provide weak evidence and do little more than show that an outcome is possible. In order to claim that a new treatment is better, you must be able to answer the question, "better than what?" Case reports and case series are most useful for generating hypotheses that can be tested in a comparative study.
