The NIH Division of Public Health Methods began immediately to work with the Selective Service on physical examinations of draftees. Surprisingly, 43% were found unfit for military service—28% unfit for any military service and 15% fit for limited service only. Bad teeth were the single greatest cause of health problems in recruits. Syphilis and the disabilities it caused was also widespread.
