This
figure presents the two leading causes of death in different global
regions as defined by the World Bank:
According to these Global Burden of Disease (GBD) estimates, close
to 1 of every 5 deaths in SSA in 2001 was due to AIDS and 1 of every
6 to 7 deaths was due to malaria. AIDS and malaria were estimated to
have caused about 30% of all deaths in SSA in 2001. Outside of SSA,
AIDS deaths were not included in the 10 leading causes of death in
any of the regions except for Latin America and the Caribbean where
it was the 10th leading cause, and in South Asia where it was the
8th leading cause.
