SUMMARY AND CONCLUSIONS
The
AIDS pandemic is one of the most severe infectious disease pandemics
in modern times.
The global impact of AIDS is very uneven, with
disastrous demographic impact in many SSA countries and in IDU and
MSM populations throughout the world, but minimal to no impact in
most heterosexual populations outside of SSA.
Even
if all new HIV infections could be prevented as of 2007, there would
still be insufficient global funds to provide anti-retroviral
treatment (ART) to all who may need such treatment in resource poor
countries.
The AIDS pandemic has been in its post peak
phase since the late 1990s.
However, annual numbers of new HIV infections will remain
unacceptably high in SSA and in MSM and IDU populations worldwide
until the art and science of changing HIV-risk behaviors are
improved and behavioral change programs are fully accepted and
supported.
