Three primary explanations for alienating family mambers abd friends have been proposed (10):

1. Anger and frustration are vented to family and friends in the belief it is safer to express these negative feelings to family members and friends than towards patients and coworkers.

2. Fearing breech of confidentiality physician may feel unable to share troublesome experiences with others.

3. Family and friends may be perceived as another source of potential demands.
