Generalism is being
a life long medical student learning around patients helping to solve their
problems that may not be rooted to just their disease (internal Medicine)
but also their external environment (External Medicine in India aka
community medicine). These are our college students and a current elective
student from Australia (from who we have learned more about generalism as it
is practised in Australia) These students are seen learning around a patient
with large hands and feet who didn’t have money for further investigations.
Our medical students crowd-sourced funds for his hormonal investigations and
imaging by collecting 20 Rs each from other medical students and this
enabled us to develop a concrete plan for this patient who was wondering
everywhere for his diagnosis and treatment since many years. Currently this
patient is confident and inspired enough to be able to attempt to become a
doctor himself.
