Among the designs described above, some are more sensitive than others to the threats outlined.

Generally speaking, experimental designs ensure greater internal validity, although external validity is poorer. However, when evaluating interventions or organizations, it is very difficult to select the subjects of the study randomly, so the researcher-evaluator must identify possible threats to the study’s validity, and design measures to best control them.

The slide shows how internal validity increases in the direction of the arrows. In this collection of designs, the best validity is obtained with time series with equivalent control groups.
