I was looking for something on work because I’ve done a lot
with vocational rehab and work and I think it is something that is really important for
people’s lives and success and I found one, fairly recent. They have taken a
longitudinal study that started in the 1960’s went on in the 1970’s. It began in the
1980’s and started with 3101 men which dropped in the mid 1990’s to 334 that they were
actually able to find and have agree to come in. They interviewed and tested them on
multiple occasions over the years so they did have some good data. And looking at that
data across those years it showed a positive effect of more challenging work on intellect,
especially for the older workers – the oldest in their population. Again, you could
argue it either way as they did. You could say staying involved in work, you know using
it, promotes keeping cognition as you age. Alternately, the fact that these people were
engaged for years and able to do that, it just makes sense that they were repeatedly
functioning at a higher level as they age. |
