How to Get Here

By Car

  • From the East - Cars traveling from the east via the PA Turnpike (I-76) should take Exit 6 to I-376 West. From 376 take Exit 7A, Oakland, onto Bates Street. Stay on Bates until it ends at Bouquet Street. Turn left onto Bouquet, then right at the first light onto Forbes Avenue.

  • From the West - Cars traveling from the west via the PA Turnpike (I-76) should take Exit 3 and follow I-79 South to I-279 South. (You exit to the left off I-79.) Follow 279 into the city, to the I-376 Monroeville Exit. Follow 376 to the Forbes Avenue/Oakland Exit. Forbes Avenue then leads right into the Pitt campus.

  • From the North - Take I-79 South to I-279 South. (You exit to the left off I-79.) Follow 279 into the city, to the I-376 Monroeville Exit. Follow 376 to the Forbes Avenue/Oakland Exit. Forbes Avenue then leads right into the Pitt campus.

  • From the South - Follow I-79 North to the I-279 North Exit. Take 279 through the Fort Pitt Tunnels and across the bridge to the I-376 Monroeville Exit (first exit on the right). Follow 376 to the Forbes Avenue/Oakland Exit. Forbes Avenue leads into the Pitt campus.

By bus - Greyhound-Trailways bus station in Pittsburgh is located at 11th Street and Liberty Avenue, downtown and can be reached by local PAT buses or by taxi service (412-391-2300 or 412-261-5400).

Port Authority Transit Sytem (PAT bus) is a publicly owned mass transit system operated by Port Authority of Allegheny County. Fares vary within a five-zone system extending in all directions from downtown to the outer suburbs. Basic fare is $1.25. Exact change is required. Transfers can be purchased for a quarter, and can be used for one connection in any direction within three hours of the time of purchase; pay as you enter on inbound trips toward downtown Pittsburgh, pay as you exit on outbound trips before 7:00 p.m. After 7:00 p.m., pay as you enter on all trips. Local buses numbered 71 (A, B, C, or D), 67 (A or F), or 61 (A, B, or C) come into Oakland and may be boarded along Fifth Avenue, downtown. For bus routes and times call 412-231-5707.

Yellow Cab (412-655-8100) and People's Cab (681-3131) provide service to the Oakland area. Fares from downtown are approximately $9, and fares from the airport are approximately $33.

By plane - Pittsburgh International Airport is about 15 miles west of Pittsburgh Airlines Transportation Co. (412) 471-8900 provides buses to downtown and the Holiday Inn in Oakland, where the University is located.

They run to Oakland: Monday through Friday, 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. every hour on the hour; on Saturdays at 9:00 a.m. and 11:00 a.m., and 1:00, 3:00, and 5:00 p.m.; and Sundays at 12:00 p.m., and 2:00 to 10:00 p.m., every hour.

They run from the Holiday Inn in Oakland to the airport: Monday through Friday, 10 minutes before the hour, starting at 6:50 a.m., through 7:50 p.m.; on Saturdays at: 7:50, 9:50, 11:50 a.m., and 1:50, 3:50, and 5:50 p.m.; and Sundays at 8:50 and 10:50 a.m. and 12:50 through 7:50 p.m. ten minutes before the hour.

No reservation is necessary. Fare, one way is $12.50; round trip is $21.00. The trip takes approximately 40-55 minutes.

Also, after 6:45 a.m., a PAT bus runs every 45 minutes from the airport to Oakland and back for $1.95.

By train - Amtrak (1-800-872-7245 in Western PA) has two east-bound trains and two west-bound trains each day. Connections can be made in Chicago and New York. The terminal is located at Liberty and Grant Streets downtown. Transportation to Pitt from downtown can be made by bus or cab.
