What Types of Companies Hire Engineers?

  1. Boeing

    Famous for their jumbo jets, Boeing is an Aerospace engineering company that is the largest designer and manufacturer of commercial jetliners and military aircraft. They design and manufacture spacecraft, missiles, defense systems, helicopters, and satilite communication systems. They are one of the largest U.S. exporters in terms of sales and is the prime contractor for the International Spacestation.

    Boeing's headquarters is located in Chicago, Illinois and employs more than 168,000 people in the United States alone. They boast a very talented and diverse employee workforce with many holding college degrees or above.

    • Researching and developing un-manned technology such as drones and space capsules

    Boeing has employment oppertunites in Alabama, Arizona, California, Kansas, Missouri, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Texas, and Washington, as well as other locations world wide. This company boasts a very diverse and cooperative working environment but the cylical nature of their yearly roll-outs in terms of aviation and military development leads to a varying and sometimes gruling ammount of work and long hours. Even so, this company is rated well by it's employees and they are well compensated for their time spent. The average salary for an entry level engineer seems to fall around the $78,000 mark with industrial engineers averaging roughly $65,000 a year on the low end, and systems engineers averaging $89,000 a year on the high end. other departmental and manigiral positons are significantly better paying with seinor engineers and engineering managers making around $120,000 each.


  2. IPS (Integrated Project Services)

    This engineering firm specializes in hospital services and construction. Everything from cafeterias to drugvaults, they are commissioned to design and build the structures and the utlities that enable it to function. Each branch holds all the personnel nessicary for the designing of these structures: accountants, several types of engineers, design leads, architechts and even the regional heads are all housed in this firm.

    Working Environment:

    The IPS Branch located outside of Phillidelphia has a very nice layout and has many different places that enable effective collaberation between engineering teams and other groups such as designers and accountants. Coffee is provided by the company, free of charge and the office is well lit. The hours are managable with the average day consisting of 6am-4pm with an hour for lunch. In many cases the work load depends upon the jobs that the company is contracting for in the area and can vary greatly from month to month. Average salary for an entry level engineering position is right around $64,000.
