Introduction

You are the nurse working the 11pm - 7am shift on a medical-surgical unit. Mr. Jones is a 59 year old accountant who was admitted to your unit for the evaluation and treatment of uncontrolled hypertension. During your midnight assessment, Mr. Jones complains of feeling light headed and dizzy. Your initial assessment reveals a BP of 168/100, pulse 174, respirations 24, SpO2 93% on room air. Mr. Jones discloses that his heart "feels like it racing in his chest". He is anxious and diaphoretic. You notify his physician whose orders include a 12 lead ECG.

Your task during this WebQuest is to research various cardiac rhythms and arrhythmias. At the conclusion of the WebQuest, you will be asked to identify Mr. Jones heart rhythm and to develop a plan of care appropriate for his medical diagnosis and treatment.

Performance objectives:

  1. Describe the normal physiology of cardiac conduction.
  2. Develop a basic understanding of the components of the ECG complex.
  3. Compare basic cardiac dysrhythmias.
  4. Describe the causes and treatments of these basic dysrhythmias.
