The History Center is operated by the Historical Society of Western Pennsylvania and is associated with the Smithsonian Institution.

The History Center is housed in the former headquarters of the Chautauqua Lake Ice Company. The century-old building was renovated and opened in 1996 as the History Center, yet many of the building's original, sturdy structures remain. The History Center offers a Café and a Gift Shop on the first floor, as well as an informative robot greeter. Exhibits throughout the History Center include a rare stainless steel 1936 DeLuxe Ford Sedan, a Children's Discovery Place for hands-on fun with history and a journey through time in the second floor's "Points in Time: Building a Life in Western Pennsylvania, 1750-Today," as well as many others.
