“Hobbes: Science and the Science of Politics”

Abstract: Impressed with Galileo, Hobbes provides an epistemological view of science and applies that frame to politics. The limits and strengths of his approach are discussed. While we can recognize serious difficulties with his seventeenth century views of the natural sciences, nevertheless Hobbes’ science of politics, as an artificial construction whose purpose is social peace, has continued merit.
