Abstract: A dominant family of models of various symptoms of schizophrenia postulates a breakdown in a self-monitoring mechanism.
In this talk, I shall argue that whatever its explanatory power regarding other symptoms, the model cannot explain the most common: auditory verbal hallucination. In part, the problem is that theorists have lost track of the precise questions needing answers. I shall propose some answers and sharpen further questions by discussing the notion of automaticity in mental processes.
