Emotions as Multimodal Constructs

Abstract: The aim of this talk is to develop a theoretical framework for understanding how emotion experience is constructed. The components of emotion experience can be broken down into the following five primary modalities: representational, evaluative, bodily, behavioral, and phenomenological. I argue that emotions should be understood as synthetic, multimodal constructs consisting of a variable subset of these modalities. The result is the multimodal construct model (MCM) which presents a biologically plausible framework for understanding the process of emotion construction based on information processing principles.
