Currently overall in developed countries half of patients with cancer are curable. In the developing setting that figure is closer to one third. There is also a discussion of the use of the fatality ratio (mortality/incidence) as an indicator of survival. In most countries cancer registries to not keep detailed survival statistics, overall, by site or by stage. Such data are important for evaluating the effectiveness of treatment programs. When they are not available, the fatality ratio can be calculated and compared with expected survivals shown in the table mentioned above. Discrepancies will point to potential inadequacies of available treatment programs that need to be investigated further.
