I wish to recognize the important contributions of Dr. L. Breslow and Dr. Anthony Miller as the principal authors of the WHO Monograph on National Cancer Control Programmes on which this lecture is based. Dr. Jan Stjernswärd provided the essential leadership and vision in developing the WHO public health approach to national cancer control.
