A national cancer control program should formulate treatment policies to assure some uniformity in the quality of care across the country that is also cost-effective within the available resources. Multidisciplinary tumor groups and tumor boards play a key role in formulating tumor treatment guidelines, and in positively influencing the general standard of practice of community oncology. The strengths and weaknesses of the use of norms and standards are reviewed, particularly in view of the growing ability to access timely, peer-reviewed information over the Internet, such as the PDQ system.
