These types of maps are more useful in studying disease. However, they require more work to create than spot maps.

With area maps you can use shaded or coded areas to show either the incidence of an event in subareas, or the distribution of some condition over a geographic area.

You would need to calculate a specific rate for each area, then divide the number of cases in each area by the population at risk in the same area.
