What happened was that the Europeans don't want big agribusiness to control
their own food and when Monsanto first introduced GMO foods into Europe they
thought that Monsanto was trying to take over their food supply and you know
the Europeans are as interested in food security as the rest of us. But
Greenpeace had an awakening. They realized here was the way to be against
GM foods. Now, originally maybe they had some good ideas. Originally,
their original position was well GM foods may be dangerous (MAY BE).
Usually if you listen to them they need to test them, they need to test
them. Make sure that they're okay. Well, all those tests have been done,
but Greenpeace is still not satisfied with that. Why? Because this is the
best fundraising campaign that Greenpeace has ever had. Do you know the
annual budget of Greenpeace? I'm sure you don't, I don't. But the people
who estimate these things, you know Greenpeace doesn't make that publicly
available, but people who estimate it, estimate it to be about 500 million
Euros a year. This is a not-for-profit organization and where did all of
this money start pouring in from? It started pouring in as soon as they
started their campaign. Now of course you could have said well we don't
like Monsanto, so we just ban Monsanto. Well that won't work. And why
won't it work? Because farmers buy their seeds through Monsanto and they
can't afford not to. |
