Barbara McCloskey’s research focuses on the relationship between art, war, and exile in the 20th century. Her first book, George Grosz and the Communist Party (Princeton, 1997) explored art, communism, and the crisis of modernity between the two world wars. Her most recent work, Artists of World War II (Greenwood, 2005), focuses specifically on the World War II years and provides the first international survey of art during this period to encompass both the European and Asian Pacific theaters of the conflict. She is now pursuing book research on the experiences of German exile artists and intellectuals in the United States during World War II. Professor McCloskey teaches undergraduate courses on Modernism and 20th-century German art, and graduate seminars on topics in exile studies, the art historical discipline, and critical theory.
