A past president of the international Society of Architectural Historians, Franklin Toker teaches urban history and medieval and American art and architecture at the University of Pittsburgh. Dr. Toker's The Church of Notre-Dame in Montréal won the Hitchcock Award of the Society of Architectural Historians and his Florence Cathedral article in the Art Bulletin won him the Porter Prize of the College Art Association, making him the only scholar to have been awarded the ultimate prizes in both art and architectural history.
Dr. Toker has held appointments as a Member of the Institute for Advanced Study at Princeton, New Jersey, and as a Guggenheim and NEH Fellow. Beyond the United States and Canada, he has lectured to audiences in Europe, India, China, and Japan, and was a visiting professor at three Italian universities. At the University of Florence, Toker was the first non-Italian ever invited to teach the history of art.
Both Toker's Notre-Dame and Pittsburgh: An Urban Portrait have gone through
three editions (the former in two languages), and his recent Fallingwater
Rising: Frank Lloyd Wright, E. J. Kaufmann, and America's Most Extraordinary
House is in its fourth hardcover printing at Knopf/Random House, and in
paperback. A Chinese edition of Fallingwater is in preparation, and the book
is being turned into a feature-length movie. The Pontifical Institute of
Mediaeval Studies is beginning to publish Toker's four-volume archaeological
history of medieval Florence and its cathedral, which has been called the
most ambitious American publication on medieval archaeology in decades.
