Awards and scholarships

The Department of History of Art and Architecture gives two awards to outstanding undergraduates:

• The Haskins Undergraduate Student Award is given to an art history or architectural studies major who has demonstrated academic excellence in the history of art and architecture. The award is announced at the department's annual Golden Daffodil Award ceremony in the spring and bears a prize of $250.

• The Friends of Frick Fine Arts Undergraduate Writing Award is intended to recognize and promote fine writing in art history. One prize of $100 will be awarded. The award winner will be acknowledged at the department's annual Golden Daffodil Award ceremony in the spring.

Art history and architectural studies majors should also be aware of the following study and fellowship possibilities:

• The Virginia C. Lewis Scholarship Fund, created at The Pittsburgh Foundation through a bequest from the estate of Virginia C. Lewis to provide annual scholarships to undergraduate students who are residents of Allegheny County and majoring in art or art history.

• Nationality Room Scholarships are for outstanding students studying abroad. For application and further information regarding deadlines, contact the Nationality Rooms Programs, 1209 Cathedral of Learning.

• The University Honors College administers several awards and makes special efforts to assist interested students in preparation for prestigious national and international fellowships. Students should contact the University Honors College, 3500 Cathedral of Learning (412-624-6880).

• Undergraduate Research Fellowships are granted to support student involvement in independent research under the direction of a faculty mentor.

• Undergraduate Teaching Fellowships are awarded for joint student-faculty teaching projects.

• National Endowment of the Humanities Younger Scholar Program is a special program that provides financial resources for both the student and a faculty mentor to engage in humanities research.

• University of Pittsburgh Alumni Association Fellowship offers $5,000 for a U.S. citizen or permanent resident whose undergraduate degree was received from the University of Pittsburgh. The Graduate Office (910 CL) has more information and applications.
