Austin was born and raised in Torrance, CA, a suburb approximately 20 miles south of downtown Los Angeles. He graduated from Torrance High School in 2008. Inspired by his interest in science and love for James Avery’s role as Uncle Phil in The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, he attended the University of California, San Diego and graduated in 2012 with a B.S. in Biochemistry/Chemistry. While there, he carried out undergraduate research in the lab of Dr. Charles Perrin exploring a more efficient route towards cyclodeca-1,5-diyn-3-ene. He then obtained a M.S. in Chemistry in 2014 at the University of California, Los Angeles working in the lab of Dr. Kendall Houk, where he studied computationally the origins of stereoselectivity in an organocatalytic Nazarov cyclization. After living in southern California his entire life, he moved to the University of Pittsburgh to gain the full four seasons experience working in Dr. Paul Floreancig’s lab. Outside of lab, he enjoys playing basketball, hiking, and going to karaoke.
