Using the Books Link

The Books link is useful for learning more about some of the terms in a PubMed record. Currently one book is available through the Books link, Molecular Biology of the Cell, 3rd edn, by Alberts, B., Bray, D., Lewis, J., Raff, M., Roberts, K. and Watson, J., 1994, Garland Publishing, Inc.

Principles:

  1. Words and phrases in a PubMed record corresponding to words and phrases in a linked book will become hypertext links when the Books link is used.
  2. False hits are possible for terms that have one meaning in molecular biology and another in some other area related to medicine.
  3. You can only access Books through the book link. There is no access that corresponds to the normal format of a book.

Example:

  1. From search results, choose a record and click on the author's names.
  2. In the next screen, click on the Books link. A new version of the record will load. All of the words and phrases linked to a book are underlined in the title, abstract, and MeSH terms.
  3. Click on one of the underlined terms.
  4. A list of book sections related to that term appears. Click on the title to open one.
  5. After the book section opens, there is a bar to the left of the screen with all the subsections of that topic listed, links to figures, and references cross-linked to PubMed. Click on these to navigate between sections.
  6. Use the browser Back button to return to your search.
