Getting From PubMed to Full Text articles

LinkOut

LinkOut contains several types of links. First, there are links to publishers websites which may or may not allow you to access the full text of articles. Second, there are links to consumer health information in MEDLINEplus.

Principles:

  1. LinkOut is somewhat confusing and seems to evolve often.
  2. The only way to know if you can access the full text of a journal with a full text link is to click on the link and see where it goes.
  3. Some journals post all their issues free on the Internet, such as BMJ. Others have free back issues but not current issues.
  4. Some journals that are available only by subscription on the Internet have established links between PubMed and their full-text on the Internet. Their links will appear on everyone's search results, sometimes as a button below the title of the journal in the Abstract or Citation format, and also from the LinkOut link.
  5. To see a complete list of LinkOut providers, go to your Cubby and click on All LinkOut Providers in the blue bar to the left of the screen.

Examples:

A full text journal available for free to anyone on the Internet: PNAS
    1. Enter this search: PNAS[ta] AND 1999[dp]
    2. From the search results, there are several ways to access the full text:
      1. Click on the Free in PMC button that appears next to the title.
      2. Click on the author's names for a record. In the next screen, the LinkOut link will appear to the right of the citation, and a second button appears under the title of the article. Click on LinkOut to see all the available options for that article. Options available will vary from record to record.
        1. Click on either a link under Publishers/providers saying full-text online or the Free in PMC button.
        2. For consumer information, click on any links that appear under MEDLINEplus.
    2. An example only available through subscription:
    1. Enter the following search: biological psychiatry[ta]
    2. Choose a record, click on the author's names, then on LinkOut.
    3. Click on the Elsevier Science button or on the full-text online link.
    4. A new window will open with the article's citation displayed. To get to the full text, click on jump to full text.

Ordering Documents through Loansome Doc

The Loansome Doc feature allows you to select records in PubMed, and order a full text copy of the selected articles from our library, or any other participating library.

Principles:

  1. You must sign up to be a Loansome Doc user with a participating library. A list of non-USA libraries that provide document delivery outside of the United States is found on the page Non-U.S. Health Libraries Providing Document Delivery Internationally. A list of USA libraries that provide international Loansome Doc services is found in the document U.S. Health Libraries Providing Document Delivery Internationally
  2. This service is available through University of Pittsburgh Health Sciences Library System to anyone with a valid HSLS library card, including members. For more information on the HSLS Membership Program, see http://www.hsls.pitt.edu/member.
  3. If you join the HSLS Membership Program, a Loansome Doc sign up form will be sent to you, and we will complete your online registration for you. If you join through another library, you must contact them first to confirm that they are accepting members, and follow their instructions for signing up.
  4. Document delivery methods and payment rates and policies will vary depending on the capabilities of the library you use. HSLS delivers by Internet (pdf), fax, or mail.
