  • Alex Almarza and Sabrina Noorani are expecting their first child at the end of the summer.

  • Jorge Gil and his wife Line welcomed their baby daughter, Amélie Sofia, in March. Her brother, Alirio, now 3 years old. Jorge recently celebrated his 10th anniversary at ANSYS and transferred to the Paris office in July.

  • In December 2010, Matt Fisher moved to Philadelphia along with his wife Lisa. Matt received his PhD under Dr. Woo in 2010 and will join the McKay Orthopaedic Research Laboratory at the University of Pennsylvania as a Post-doctoral Fellow. Matt will receive additional training under Dr. Robert Mauck in the area of tissue engineering of fibrocartilage, such as the knee meniscus and intervertebral disc of the spine.

  • Dr. & Mrs. Woo have become grandparents again! Congratulations to Kirstin and her husband Adam on the birth of their 2nd daughter Arden on Thanksgiving Day. She was born at 4:02 am and joins big sister Zadie.

  • The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs has appointed Thay Q. Lee, Ph.D., senior research career scientist - the highest honor it bestows on scientists. Dr. Lee, professor and vice chairman for research in UC Irvine's Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, will receive $1.4 million to support his research and the Orthopaedic Biomechanics Lab at the Long Beach VA Medical Center. He is conducting a study to better understand the biomechanics of flexing and kneeling. Dr. Lee completed his master's degree under Dr. Woo at UCSD. "Dr. Woo is a lifelong mentor and has always led by expample for us to follow in our profession," said Dr. Lee. When told of Dr. Lee's accomplishment, Dr. Woo said "I am delighted and very proud of your outstanding achievements. Just am glad that I can brag that you are one of my very best students! Thank you for making me look so good as a teacher."

  • Greg Carlin recently moved to Atlanta, GA to launch a new Intellectual Property (IP) law firm in Atlanta with three other principals, McKeon, Meunier, Carlin and Curfman, LLC. McKeon Meunier focuses on the essential elements of IP legal practice. The firm works with small and large corporations, emerging growth companies, non-profits, universities, research institutions, and their capital and advisory partners, to secure intellectual property rights. Some of the services their firm provides include patent prosecution, strategic IP counseling, portfolio management, IP transactiosn/due diligence, technology transfer, opinions, trademarks and pre-litigation counseling.

  • Congratulations to former MSRC staff member Karen Ohland who has been named vice president of Financial Operations for the Knowledge and Community Sector of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME). The announcement was made during the proceedings of the Society's 2010 Annual Meeting, which was held June 4-9 in Pittsburgh, PA. In her voluntary position as vice president, Karen will be responsible for overseeing the financial operations of ASME's Knowledge and Community Sector. She will work with the sector's Financial Operations Board in developing and implementing strategic and business planning, budgeting, and metrics to measure the performance of strategic goals. During her three-year term, she will also work with the ASME Board of Governors and other executive leadership in advancing the Society's strategic initiatives in energy, engineering workforce development and global outreach. In addition Karen also continues in her current work as financial administrator for Education and Concerts & Lectures at The Metropolitan Museum of Art, where she oversees the financial activities of the museum's $12 million enterprise.

  • While at the recent 14th ESSKA Congress that took place June 9-12, 2010 in Oslo, Norway, Dr. Woo had the opportunity to have lunch with former MSRC fellows. In addition, Dr. Woo gave the opening highlight lecture at ESSKA titled "Healing of a Torn ACL: The Holy Grail".

  • Mr. Chris Carruthers, a former undergraduate summer student at the MSRC has been selected to receive a National Science Foundation (NSF) Graduate Research Fellowship Award. This award is among the most competitive and highly sought graduate fellowships a student can receive. Chris will conduct his research under Dr. Michael Sacks. (Summer 2010)

  • Dr. Woo and Mrs. Woo recently met up with former MSRC fellow Dr. Asbjørn Årøen and his wife Bente in a recent trip to Norway. Asbjørn is currently a researcher at the Oslo Sports Trauma Research Center. He is a consultantassociated professor in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at Oslo University Hospital Ullevål and is a specialist in general surgery and orthopaedic surgery. His clinical practice focuses on knee and shoulder injuries. Asbjørn was a member of the scientific committee for the 14th ESSKA Congress that took place June 9-12, 2010 in Oslo, Norway. He also serves as the ESSKA member at large (Norway) and has been a KSSTA Editorial Member since 2010.

  • Congratulations to Dr. Stefano Zaffagnini who was recently promoted to Professor at Instituti Ortopedici Rizzoli. In addition, Stefano recently edited a book with David Dejour. Stefano was a Fellow at the MSRC from 1993-1994. (Spring 2010)

  • Dr. Yuhua Song, former post-doc at the MSRC has been awarded an NIH-K25 Grant (Quantitative Mentored Scientist Development Award) for her proposal titled "Protein Interactions Underlying Fas-mediated DISC in Cholangiocarcinoma". Please join us in congratulating Yuhua for this wonderful accomplishment. (September 2009)
  • We are happy to announce that current and former members of the MSRC received awards at the International Symposium on Ligaments and Tendons – IX held in Las Vegas on February 18. Matt Fisher, Dr. Woo’s student received the Best Student Paper Award for his paper “In-Vitro Evaluation of Suture Augmentation Techniques After ACL Injury”. Kristen Moffat, a former MSRC student also received the Best Student Paper Award for her paper “Nanofiber Composite for Tendon-to-Bone Interface Tissue Engineering”. Chih-Hsiang Chang, fellow of Chih-Hwa Chen, Dr. Woo’s former fellow, received the Best Fellow Paper Award for his paper “Bioengineered Cambial Layer progenitor Cell Sheets Transplantation for Tendon-Bone Healing”. Shoji Fukano, student of Hiromichi Fujie, Dr. Woo’s former fellow received the Best Poster Award for his poster “Mechanical Function of the Three Bundles of the Anterior Cruciate Ligament in Response to Externally Applied Loads”.   • The MSRC is pleased to announce that Dr. Glen Livesay, Dr. Woo’s former PhD student was recently the inaugural designee for the Samual F. Hulbert Chair in Biomedical Engineering at Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology in Indiana. Glen is an Associate Professor of Applied Biology and Biomedical Engineering at Rose-Hulman.  For the next three years, Glen will receive a summer stipend plus professional development funds to cover such things as summer undergraduate research assistant stipends, equipment, supplies and travel. Congratulations Glen for this great achievement.  (February 2009)
