Human Action and the Biological Foundations of Ethics
Gabriele comes from the University of Udine,
Italy, where he teaches philosophy of mind, ethics, and political
philosophy. He has a PhD from the University of Padua ( Italy),
and another one from the University of St Andrews ( Scotland). His
interests are the philosophy of mind, and the theory of action,
both in the analytical tradition, and in the history of philosophy
(particularly in Aquinas). During his stay at the Center, he will
work on the biological bases of human action and ethics. He will
be mainly dealing with two questions: how are our actions conditioned
by our biological constitution? Can facts about our biological constitution
account for what is good for us, and – in case – supply
reasons for action? Besides philosophy, he likes music, especially
classical and folk (He also plays the violin), and movies (watching
"real" ones, but also filming short stories). He practices several
sports, though he claims to be equally poor in all of them (skiing,
tennis, squash, golf, biking, running, sailing).
